The above reference to the full sized Jacobs chucks assumes your interest is to get some increase in size over the 5c and pot chucks that is standard on HB dividing heads.

As an ebay item, that model# should indicate that whatever nose adaptor is fitted, it would be interchangable. It will require a user made adaptor plate to fit to any spindle. Given the 4" center height of the HB, it seems the 91-F1 with a 7-1/2" handwheel is the item to look for. The -F1 was available with either a 9" or a 7-1/2" diameter handwheel, and a 2.5" internal locating taper on the back, surrounded by a 4" flange/bolt circle. The -A6 has a 9" handwheel, and has an internal locating taper on the back 4-3/16" ID surrounded by a 6" flange/bolt circle. The 91-F1 is for flange mount adaptor plates for spindle suggested OD 2" and under. The 91-A6 is for 6" american standard spindles bolt on, or for a backplate for threaded spindles with OD of 2-1/16" and up. Jacobs made 3 chucks that are "adaptable" to threaded nose or *other* non standard spindles. "Does anyone know if a Jacobs made a Rubberflex attachment/or backplate was to fit this spindle nose type?" The plates come in different diameters, so of course one with a wide enough flange to machine down for the chuck would be desirable.Ĭongratulations on the find! these lathes are a treat to use for small parts. I don't know if tooling plates were made for the smaller 4c spindle od's or not, but it might be worth checking with Sage tool (ebay seller) who often has this type tooling for sale. sometimes additional fixturing will be welded or bolted to the face. Designed to be machined in place and used for odd ball set ups. Just a small thick backplate with the internal taper and the set screw pin. These are the taper mount tooling plates. If your nose taper OD is the same as a later 5c taper mount, then back plates are available *at times* off ebay usually "reasonably". However, it is smaller than the later 5c threaded spindles. One of my splitbeds is a 4c, but it has the threaded spindle. I thought the question was about the size taper for the 4c nose spindle. An interesting side note, I found this lathe thrown out on the curb on junk night in my town! The back drive & compound were missing, but it did have the tailstock & a fairly nice 3 jaw chuck. Is there any source other than ebay for parts for this lathe? Is there some other designation for this taper? (Morse has it’s 1, 2, 3, etc.) The 7” inch swing model comes with a 3C collet & I’m assuming the external taper is proportionally smaller. uk identifies it as “The patented Hardinge Taper-nose spindle fitting” (See )I know that Hardinge no longer offers a machine with this taper & it seems the 4C collet has fallen by the wayside as well. My problem is identifying the external taper. Face plate, 4 jaw chuck) So far I’ve picked up a Hardinge compound, in excellent condition, on ebay & a full set of used 4C collets, which fit directly in the spindle internal taper. I own a 9” swing Hardinge Cataract lathe (Early 1900’s, Pre 1920?) & would like to purchase tooling for it.
